Lightning in Cheyenne!

7/31/2017 (Permalink)

Summer Time in Cheyenne
Here in Cheyenne, it is the middle of summer. With summer comes thunderstorms and with thunderstorms comes lightning. In fact, all thunderstorms produce lightning!

Lightning Damage

Lightning can cause damage to humans, the environment, and structures alike. Lightning is the number one cause of death from natural disasters yearly.  For safety reasons, when thunderstorms hit, it is best to stay inside and away from windows. If you can’t get inside, try to get to a vehicle and/or stay away from trees.

Damage to the Environment

Lightning can reach temperatures of up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to temperatures this high, lightning is known to catch grass and trees on fire with a single strike. If this fire is not contained, it can and will spread to other structures.

Damage to Structures

With lightning reaching such high temperatures, if your house or structure gets hit, you need to call the fire department. Lightning takes the path of least resistance. This means that lightning will travel through metal and wood but not brick. Wood cannot handle the high temperatures that lightning produces and thus will combust.
